Planning

The Union Township Planning Department actively works to promote high quality and sustainable development patterns within the township by carefully evaluating each development request against the adopted policy recommendations of the Union Township Horizon 20/30 Land Use Plan. This Land Use Plan was adopted by the Union Township Board of Trustees and establishes different corridor-specific "ground-rules" for development throughout the township. This corridor-specific plan was developed through a series of public meetings involving key stakeholders, including business owners, elected and appointed officials, and residents of Union Township, and is meant to provide long term, sustainable growth solutions. While each development maintains its own unique set of circumstances, the key to promoting high-quality development is ensuring that the goals of the adopted land use plan are consistently advanced with each successive development request. This is especially critical given the township's continued population growth, estimated to swell to 51,602 residents by the year 2010.

In addition to ensuring consistency with the adopted Land Use Plan, department staff members collaborate with other jurisdictions throughout the area and the region in an effort to develop successful mid-range and long-range plans to address the future transportation and economic development needs of Union Township, Clermont County, and the Greater Cincinnati Region. A successful example of this multi-jurisdictional effort is the township’s continued commitment to the Eastern Corridor Long Range Multi-Modal Transportation Initiative. Additionally, the department continually explores methods and strategies to enhance the overall quality of life within the township, including the application of pedestrian-friendly concepts and high-quality commercial and green space development principles to new development proposals.
